After that mind-blowing Agnis Philosophy tech demo, here comes Crytek, claiming that CG quality graphics are just around the corner. According to Cevat Yerli, we will be able to render out film CG quality rendering in real-time, in two years time. This obviously means that games will look as good as Dreamworks’ Shrek in the next two years, when next-generation consoles will come out.
Cevat went ahead and said that we can already have Shrek-quality graphics in our games. And that’s true, as Nvidia’s and AMD’s latest graphics cards offer amazing raw power and proved at this year’s E3 what can be achieved when developers decide to actually take advantage of them.
In a huge interview with VentureBeat, Cevat reminded us that he had already said, a couple of years ago, that they’ll be able to do Shrek-quality graphics in 2012:
“In 2008 I gave a speech on the future of computer graphics, I said in 2012 we’ll have Shrek quality, and today we are Shrek quality. I think in two years more.”
Now some of you might ask why our games don’t look as good as all those CG films, but you already know the answer on that question, right?
In addition, Crytek has revealed their cloud plans with CryEngine. CryEngine Cloud is official and according to the company, CryEngine cloud is meant to offer the best visuals at the lowest friction barrier, with the most efficient cost. CryEngine cloud platform will be implemented in GFACE, Crytek’s social hub, and it’s going to be very different from Gaikai or OnLive.
Let’s hope that Crytek – or another company – will unveil the full capabilities of CryEngine 3 in a PC exclusive game.
In other news, Crytek revealed that we’re going to see the next iteration of CryEngine pretty soon. Cevat did not put any number behind it and our guess is that he is referring to CryEngine 3 Plus. A couple of days ago, we informed you about this next iteration of CryEngine 3. In fact, CryEngine 3 Plus will power Crytek’s upcoming FPS game, Crysis 3.
Could this mean that we’ll get a new tech demo of this new CryEngine 3 version during GamesCom. Sounds possible.
Stay tuned for more!
